Why did we name him Baroque?

Why "Baroque"?

Many friends ask why did you name him "Baroque". Some think we are saying "broke". No. Baroque - like the period in history and the artistic style which dominated it. The Baroque style used exaggerated motion and clear detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance and gandeur. Baroque as an adjective can mean, simply, "elaborate".

But my reasons to name the foal Baroque come more from my experience with horses of the same name. I took Dressage lessons (years ago) from Maggie Sjoberg in Ila, Georgia and for quite some time I rode a Holsteiner mare named Baroque. Her full name was Going Baroque (as in her owners almost went "broke" buying her).

Years later, I acquired a model horse painted by Sarah Mink (a VERY sought after artist in the model horse world) so I named this model Going Baroque after the mare I had ridden (photos at left). This model achieved almost renowned status in the hobby winning at competitions nationwide (two NAN championships on both west and east coast). I thought Baroque would be one of the models I'd keep forever but I chose to sell him to pay for the stud fee for this foal. So, it just seems fitting that this foal should carry Baroque in it's name to commemorate the model that helped pay for the foal's arrival into the world.

And, after seeing him in person, I'd say he IS quite elaborate!
